"Toxic
Spill by British Petroleum and Emergency Community Clean-Up"
UC Berkeley Campus - March 1, 2007 - 1 PM
Today, students from the University of California at Berkeley
staged a demonstration against the pending $500,000,000 UC contract
with British Petroleum. Holding a banner that said "No
BP Deal - UC Berkeley is Not For Sale" the demonstrators
attracted a large crowd outside California Hall who watched
as two containers of molasses and water were dumped at the doorstep
of the Chancellor's office.
The
liquid spill, made to look like an oil slick, was then cordoned
off by the students. Campus police quickly moved in. One of
the students participating in the skit was handcuffed, pushed
to the ground and then taken away as the crowd booed.

"Toxic
Spill by British Petroleum" UC Berkeley Student Detained
Berkeley - March 1, 2007 - 1 PM
Ignacio Chapela, a professor from the College of Natural Resources
at UC Berkeley, addressed a large crowd at the British Petroleum
demonstration in front of the Chancellor's Office. Chapela raised
concerns over the proposed partnership with UC Berkeley and
the giant corporation, British Petroleum. He also reassured
the crowd that the student who had been detained after participating
in the fake oil spill would be receiving legal help.
After the student was taken into custody, campus police barred
demonstrators from completing their skit and the cleanup of
the mess. Chapela finally resorted to scooping up some of the
dark liquid on the pavement and tasting it to show that it was
in fact molasses, and not oil.

Speaking to a group of UC Berkeley students, Professor Miguel
Altieri of the College of Natural Resources decried the proposed

Altieri urged students and faculty to oppose the BP contract
and that the deal must be derailed.
