The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has just switched on a new mobile air monitor in West Berkeley. Though the air district has 31monitoring stations in the Bay Area, it only has two mobile units. The three quarter of a million dollar investigation is being funded by the air district (taxpayers) in the wake of growing concerns over health impacts from the steel foundry's operations.

The community tour of the mobile unit was also attended by Pacific Steel representatives and by several city representatives, included Berkeley's mayor Tom Bates. He expressed his concern over the foundry's emissions and his commitment to solve problem that now spans decades. The installation of an off-site air monitor is a historic event since no comprehensive off site sampling of Pacific Steel's emissions has ever been done since the foundry began operating over seventy yeas ago.

Placement of the monitor directly downwind from foundry will help determine the impact of foundry emissions on residents. Its location will also monitor Duck's Nest Childcare, a block from PSC. Concerns over the impact of emissions on children at the day care center also dates back more than two decades. Berkeley Internet NEWS

Berkeley, January 10, 2008

On Wednesday night, Berkeley residents crowded into the West Berkeley Senior Center to hear a public presentation and discussion on Pacific Steel Casting's Health Risk Assessment. The foundry has been required to up date the seventeen-year old assessment and determine what cancer and non-cancer impacts the foundry might have on local residents.

Linda Maio, Berkeley City Council representative, spoke to the group about her own experience with nauseous odors from the foundry. She called for immediate action to be taken by Pacific Steel in developing an odor plan. Berkeley Internet NEWS
