Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Long Range Development Plan
Notice of Preparation (NOP) 2003

The following City council discussion illustrates a major shift of the majority of the City of Berkeley’s council elected officials regarding their responsibility to environmental oversight of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and its ongoing expansion. Prior to the lab’s molecular foundry construction, the city had rejected the community’s demand for a formal environmental review (EIR) and their concerns about nano pollution.

Much of this shift towards lack of accountability and local regulatory oversight can be attributed to LBNL’s lobbying efforts and to the fact that our City Council now has former employees of the lab among its ranks. This political engineering has allowed this federal facility to continue to skate around any substantive local oversight.
