Berkeley Saxophonequartet Berkeley Saxophone Quartet
The Berkeley Saxophone Quartet wishes to highlight the joy and beauty found in classical and jazz music with an emphasis on classical transcriptions and contemporary works for the saxophone. The main source of the group’s music is an unpublished book of such masters as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, and Debussy as arranged and transcribed by Paul Polland and Glen Johnston. Paul Polland was an accomplished oboist and devoted the last 35 years of his life to the transcription of orchestral and string quartet masterpieces for the saxophone. Glen Johnston was an internationally known clarinetist and pioneer in saxophone performance and arranging. His career included many world premiers of solo works for saxophone and orchestra with the Los Angeles philharmonic and other major orchestras.

Successful performances of the Berkeley Saxophone Quartet include Trinity Chamber Concerts and Live Oak Concerts, Berkeley; City Sounds Concerts, Oakland; Noon Time Concerts, San Francisco; Pacifica Arts Council Concerts: Bread and Roses Concerts, and numerous others in the Bay Area. The quartet received critical acclaim at the California Music Educators Conference in 1993 and were recipients of grants for a series of school performance,* by the Marcus Foster institute in 1995 and -l996. Along with the Sax Maniacs Quintet and several other

musicians, they continued in their pioneering efforts with an outstanding duo concert performing Mussorgsky's "pictures at an Exhibition', for saxophone "orchestra" at the College of Marin in 19g6. Recently they released their debut recording entitled "Chansons D'Autrefois" (Songs of Another Time), and are working to release additional recordings. To further establish the saxophone in the realm of classical music is one of the long term goals of the BSQ, in helping to fulfill the dream of the saxophone's inventor, Antoine Josef Sax.
